Home HR & Benefits Hiring New Employees Hiring Adjunct Faculty

The Los Rios Human Resources Office, Recruitment Department helps departments find qualified adjunct faculty applicants as quickly as possible while continuing to provide a hiring process that ensures nondiscrimination and equal opportunity to all qualified individuals.

There are various types of adjunct pools – those that are open for a two-year cycle, those that are open for a semester, and those that are open for a specific recruitment need. All adjunct pools will be screened for minimum qualifications at the time the pool is requested.

Adjunct job postings typically give general information about the nature of the adjunct assignment and list the minimum qualifications for the position. If you think it would be helpful for the applicant to have more detailed information in the job posting, then we are happy to work with you to modify the posting.

Overview of the Adjunct Pool Process

  1. Adjunct pools that are open for a two-year cycle include those disciplines in which adjuncts were hired in the previous two (2) fiscal years. Please see the list of current and open adjunct faculty pools on our jobs.losrios.edu site.
    • These adjunct postings will be reevaluated every two (2) years and disciplines will be added or eliminated from open applicant pools based on past necessity.
    • This list will be provided to the VPI/VPSS group at the start of the two-year cycle to allow them to proactively request, before each semester, any additional pools to be opened see #2 for information on additional pools.
    • When pools are closed after the two (2) year cycle, all applicants will be notified that, if interested in employment, they must reapply to their desired applicant pool(s) with an updated application.
  2. If there is not an open applicant pool for a needed discipline, a dean (or higher administrator) must request the posting of the new applicant pool through Recruitment, and a recruitment process for the discipline will be initiated.
    • These adjunct positions, when needed, will be advertised for the 40-day minimum but can be requested for the posting to be open for only 30 days.
    • For "hard to fill disciplines," a job posting can be requested to be open for longer than 40 days as an "open until filled," and it will remain open until filled. The posting will be closed once Recruitment has been informed who was hired, or it will automatically be closed at the end of the semester if Recruitment has not been notified.
  3. Emergency hires are exempt from the full recruitment process. All emergency hires are for one (1) term only. Refer to Board Regulation 5122: Recruitment, Selection, and Appointment: Adjunct Faculty. Please contact Recruitment for assistance with emergency hires.

Adjuncts Must Apply to the Position

Per Board Regulation 5122: Recruitment, Selection, and Appointment: Adjunct Faculty, applicants must apply to the appropriate adjunct pool to be considered for a position.

It is essential that departments only consider applicants who have applied to the appropriate adjunct pool. Individuals must be in the pool to be considered for screening/hiring to ensure fairness and equity. This includes emergency adjunct hires.

Minimum Qualifications and Transcripts

We verify that applicants meet the required minimum qualifications with the appropriate degrees and/or credentials on their transcripts and/or professional or work experience listed in their application.

Applicants who do not provide the required appropriate information are screened out of the active pool and notified via email. The applicant will remain inactive until they update their application with the required information. Applicants can contact Recruitment if they need to update their application while the posting is still active.

Keeping Adjunct Pools Updated

  • To help keep our pools current and updated with interested and available applicants, we will only have certain pools open for a two-year cycle, to refresh the applicant pool.
  • Refreshing the pools on a regular interval helps in the effort to recruit diverse candidates by reaching more new candidates when the position is re-posted.
  • Keeping pools open indefinitely leads to the applicants becoming "stale." Our goal is to provide the campus with current applicants who currently have an interest in the position and to avoid the hiring department needing to sift through many old and outdated applicants, who may no longer have interest in the position.
  • Human Resources does not have the administrative capacity to monitor several hundred part-time and full-time employment postings and keep them regularly updated with any changes to minimum qualifications from the State, CCCCO, Ed Code, and/or district updates.
  • We cannot advertise these postings continuously with outside agencies, therefore, keeping them open indefinitely does not allow us to recruit new interests outside of Los Rios.
  • Without actively reposting the positions, new applicants are added to the pool by the dean or other faculty members recruiting them, but there is no active recruitment (outside advertising) to attract new applicants and help expand the diversity of our adjunct faculty.

Indicating a Preferred Work Location

Although an applicant may indicate on the application at which campus they prefer to work, please don't exclude them if they do not choose yours. Applicants don't always update their preferred work location – even if their situation changes – and often consider other campuses.

Request to View an Adjunct Pool

Contact Recruitment to request to view an adjunct pool. At the time of your request, we will make sure that all qualified applicants are screened into the pool.

Once the applicant pool is ready for viewing, you will receive an email with instructions on how to view the pool. Usually, we can provide this to you within five days of the request. Please note that you will have access to the requested pool for six weeks.

Any applications that are received after the pool is released to you will not show up in your pool automatically. If a candidate applies after the pool is released to you, then reach out to Recruitment for an updated pool release.

If the pool is lacking in qualified applicants, then contact Recruitment to talk about other options for recruitment.
