At an increasing rate, employees who enter the workplace are identifying with different expressions of gender and identity. Binary identity—male or female—does not apply to everyone. When discussing and growing in our understanding of gender, it is important that we all facilitate a safe environment where everyone feels included and respected. To do this, we must challenge existing notions surrounding gender including expanding our vocabulary to fit gender expansive pronouns (They, Ze, Xe, etc).
Spectrum members Alejandra Garcia, Student Personnel Assistant at ARC’s Pride Center, along with Emilie Mitchell, ARC Pride Center Faculty Coordinator, will walk you through the steps you can take to create a gender inclusive work environment. They will discuss the following topics:
- Defining gender identity and gender-neutral pronouns
- Recognizing, celebrating and valuing gender diversity
- Ways to affirm and articulate individuals’ identity through pronoun usage
- Why pronouns can’t be assumed
